Creative Work

Phyllis's work crosses deep divides, such as race, culture, class and age, to promote understanding and respect.

  • Historical Fiction

Beneath the Same Stars, her debut novel, was published in 2018 by One Sky Press. It explores the Dakota Uprising of 1862 from the perspective of Sarah Wakefield, a captive during that little-known Indian war.

  • Spiritual Nonfiction

Her recent spiritual nonfiction titles have been published by Bell Sound Books. They include The Emptiness of Our Hands: 47 Days on the Streets and Practicing Presence: Insights from the Streets.

  • Poetry

She co-edited the award-winning Poetry of Presence: An Anthology of Mindfulness Poems with Ruby R. Wilson. This "good medicine poetry" by a remarkable array of poets will lead you deeper into the practice of being here now.

  • Current Project

The working title of her novel-in-progress is The Singing Stick. This book deals with aging and memory loss, family secrets, and the painful legacy for a Dakota woman of her Indian boarding school experience in the early 1900's.

  • Public Speaking

She has spoken to audiences of all sizes and types on such diverse topics as creative writing, spiritual practices, inter-religious dialogue, homelessness, the U.S-Dakota War of 1862, and mindfulness poetry.

  • Music

Though her CDs are no longer available, you can still download her solo piano music through online stores. Look for her albums Friends (2006) and Child of All Earth (2007).

About Phyllis

About Phyllis

Phyllis began writing on an old manual typewriter in childhood and never stopped. Her work explores things that tend to divide us, such as class, ethnicity, religion and gender, so that we might wrestle our way into deeper understandings of one another. These days she is especially concerned with the cultural divide between Euro-Americans and indigenous peoples.
